FANG, in remembrance

You may ask yourself what or who Fang is, I’m going to introduce him to you, here you are…

Fang was my dearest doggie. A beautiful giant Salt and Pepper Schnauzer.

Fang was living in a neighbourhood place where they sell dogs. We wanted to adopt an abandoned dog but when we saw Fang we did not hesitate about taking him home. He had beautiful eyes a little bit hidden by his furry coat.

Fang had been my faithful companion and a faithful companion to all the family till he died.

He had a beautiful grey and white dog coat, this is why his coat is presented as salt and pepper.

Fang was nice to children although his big volume had sometimes had a frightful appearance.

He was always ready to play with his ball or to give his paw to greet anybody whenever he was asked to.

Fang is no longer with us, he died some years ago, but I still remember and miss him.

But the important thing besides my feelings towards Fang I want to talk about is that his name Fang has two meanings, one in Catalan and the other in English.

In Catalan it means mud, a mixture of soil and water, the soil you step on when it rains.

In English it means large, sharp tooth, especially a canine tooth of a dog or wolf.

We were a mixed marriage Catalan and English and discussed about what name to put to the new member of the family and played a lot with words: It was funny to call a very nice and quiet dog fang meaning big canine teeth, the teeth of a wolf or a big dog, so our English friends before meeting Fang were prepared to see an aggressive dog and the Catalans one very cute and small, the one you expect to find in a family with children, a small pet.

Quite difficult to mix different opinions on the names said in one language or another. Even our daughter’s Emma has two ways of pronouncing her name. In English the stress is on the E and in Catalan it goes to the double M.

I think it’s a good way of playing with words in a mixed marriage when you are happy and involved with the language related to things that matter to you.

Do you agree?.
